Sheaffer Touchdown Admiral duo set 1940s in green Stock No 989
Sheaffer Touchdown Admiral duo set 1940s in green Stock No 989

The Sheaffer "Touchdown" like the snorkel, has a unique filling mechanism. The small "blind cap" unscrews from the end of the barrel, allowing a thick metal plunger tube to be pulled out. When this tube is pushed down again, it creates air pressure inside the pen barrel, which compresses the ink sac. At the bottom of the stroke, the pressure is released, allowing the sac to expand and draw in the ink. This sounds complex, but is in fact reliable and effective. The "Admiral" model has a solid 14ct gold open nib, on which the front part is over-plated with silver to produce a handsome two-tone effect

This example is in excellent condition. There are no marks or scratches on the plastic parts and the gold plated parts are perfect.  Internally the pen is also in great condition and I have freshly serviced it, replacing the ink sac and the rubber seals. Both pen and pencil bear the imprint "WA Sheaffer Pen Co. Fort Madison, Iowa, USA. Made In USA". The fountain pen has also been inscribed with the name "Virginia Scherrer".

The extra-fine 14ct gold open nib is stamped " SHEAFFER'S Feather Touch Made In USA 5 14K", this is a very handsome two-tone nib indeed.  It is in perfect condition and as expected, a good writer.

This pen and pencil set comes in a modern Sheaffer presentation case in new condition.
