Sheaffer Legacy touchdown fountain pen in black/gold Stock No 2269
Sheaffer Legacy touchdown fountain pen in black/gold Stock No 2269

This Sheaffer "Legacy Touchdown" pen is designed to resemble the "Imperial" and "PFM" models of the 1950s and later.  The Legacy is a current model, though this exact finish has been discontinued.  Both cap and barrel are made from metal and finished in a deep glossy black lacquer with gold plated trim.  It has a slip-on cap and is fitted with a handsome 18ct gold inset nib, it has a medium point.  This pen is probably unused, certainly it is in "as new" condition.  The touchdown filler is not used on the current Legacy pens.

The Legacy pens very much reflect the style of the Imperial and PFM models of the 1950s and '60s, though it feels heavier than either.  The barrel is somewhat fatter than the old Imperial - about the same as the PFM.  These are great pens to write with.

These earlier (1990s) Legacy pens have a "Touchdown" filler, the principle of which goes back to the 1940s.  Unscrewing the knob on the end of the barrel allows a metal tube to be pulled out.  The nib is then dipped in the ink bottle and the tube pushed back in to fill the pen.  In fact pushing the tube in compresses the ink sac by air pressure, which is released at the bottom of the stroke, allowing the ink sac to expand again, drawing in the ink.  This modern version of the touchdown filler is very versatile, because it can also use standard Sheaffer "Classic" ink cartridges, or a standard Sheaffer converter.

I have included a modern Sheaffer presentation case with this pen:
